Kindle 3 Review: I've Had It One Week And Already I Can't Live Without It

I normally don't write reviews on electronics, because even though I enjoy them and enjoy using them, I'm not much of a gadget girl. I don't obsess with my stuff beyond making sure it has a case so it doesn't get scratched up, and whenever I have the option to get something pink, I go for it. :D

That said, I really felt that I needed to write a review about the Kindle 3. The Kindle's most impressive feature is that it has a black and white e-ink screen which doesn't strain your eyes when you read, and that it's battery life lasts up to two weeks. My biggest disappointment with the iRobot (my iPad clone that ran on Android) was that reading hurt my eyes after a few hours, and that I had to plug it in after four hours of use. I normally vegetate in front of a book for 8+ hours, so I need something that won't die on my and won't hurt my eyes.

Enter the Kindle, which has a roomy 4gb that you can dump 10,000+ books into-- more than you can read in a lifetime. Of course, a bonus is that if you don't keep your wi-fi on, the battery lasts up to a month! Yeah, I know-- impressive! Aesthetically speaking, I find the Kindle sleek and utterly sexy. It's so light that it feels like you're holding a particularly thin cell phone, and there is no strain on your eyes or hands to speak of.

Most impressively, the 3rd generation Kindle also features text-to-speech-- a program that reads your e-book out to you in a remarkably human voice. Audio books usually cost more than E-books, so this is a feature that I particularly appreciate. Of course, it can't mimic the inflections and drama of an Oral Interpreter, but wait a few years and maybe it will, lol!

The speakers are located behind the unit.

My brother bought this for me as a gift, and it only cost $139 (approx P6,255) over at Amazon. When it arrived, it was already on, welcomed me by name, and was linked to my Amazon.com store account for easy book purchasing. Brilliant, brilliant.

Johnny Air shipping + taxes was P2,200 in all, making the entire purchase around P8,455. Not bad at all, considering my iRobot cost P15,000 at the height of the iPad craze.

Thin and light!

All in all, I highly recommend the Kindle if you're an avid reader. It features full PDF support, so you can literally just dump all your PDFs into the documents folder and you're good to go-- whether it's work reports, random documents, or even your (ahem ahem) pirated e-books, the Kindle can read them all with zero work on your part. Definitely one of the best buys ever, IMHO.

Stay awesome, ladies~!

I'm forever wanting one. Although...the only thing that turns me off is that it doesn't read PDFs daw that well. Most of my ebooks are in PDF format. I wonder if this 3rd generation Kindle has improved in that department.

Dianne- I hope you get one! It's really awesome and a great buy. :D

Sky- It reads them really well with this one. :) Most of my books are in PDF also, and I just dump them in and I'm good to go! Also, you can zoom in or make the orientation horizontal if the text is a bit small for you to read. I think it's about the same as a regular pocket book, though. :)

That's great to hear then! The first gen kasi reads PDFs daw but super malabo and pixelated. Now I'm definitely getting this one. 6K is pretty cheap ha!

I've always wanted one! I hope they manage to develop a version with color e-ink screens soon, then they'd seriously have an iPad killer.

I've been using the Kindle 3 for over a month and I couldn't fault it in any way. I've never had a problem with PDF's and I like that there are so many books available to download for free. If you like the Classics you can build a library without spending a penny. I also got a DVF clutch cover (http://amzn.to/biApr8) - making the Kindle all the more awesome! :)

Ade- I wouldn't mind it in color so I could read comics, but I think that it functions differently from an iPad. It's really for reading and you can just browse and play music on it, but the iPad is the opposite. It's primarily for reading and watching videos, etc. and it just so happens that you can read on it. I think they fill in different niches.

Hobby Shopper- Yeah, I totally need to grab some of my favourite classics! My guy got me a kindle case with a light for Christmas, and now I can't wait to get it, haha.

It's very trendy in Canada these days and the price went down quite a bit. I considered buying one... but I'm not sure. Kindle versions of books are still very expensive I find!
