Craft Time: How-To Make Your Own Black Rose and Pearl Chain Necklace

I'm a sucker for black roses, and since I couldn't find any charm necklaces that I particularly liked (they're usually made of cloth and/or on bib-type necklaces), I decided to just make one myself.

I used Polymer clay in "pearl" to shape the rose (baking time approximately 2 and a half to 3 minutes), and then painted it with a lovely black lacquer to make it shine like an actual black pearl. :D I used liquid Sculpey to attach it a flat metal disk (which I procured by destroying one of my old earrings, haha), but you can use anything from wood to large buttons to flat Sculpey disks.

I used a chain in antique gold and attached some pearls for the asymmetrical look that I love. Perhaps my favourite part of this necklace is the single pearl drop in the center, which I attached by cutting another length of chain in half and making a faux double necklace look. (This was achieved by linking the chain to the middle of the necklace rather than the clasp).

I really liked this design, and I think I'll be making a similar one for the site's February giveaway.

I think I'm getting much better at shaping Sculpey, and even though I have talon-like nails right now, I was still able to get the rose-petals the way I envisioned them in my head. Does anyone have any colors they'd like to suggest? :D

Polymer clay and liquid sculpey purchased from the sculpey man trading!

Yas - Thank you! :D I actually prefer working with clays because I was so frustrated in sculpture class when we were working with it. I've been playing with it on and off for the past few years, and I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of it.

Lauren - Thank you! And yes, I'll probably make some in reds or shades of pink. :D I was also thinking blue for some reason, haha. I get my polymer clay for the Sculpey Man on multiply.

As an aside, I bake it for about 3 minutes because more than that warps the petals. I wasted a lot of clay because of trial and erroring the baking process, haha.

Jfook- Thank you for dropping by!

Purple! I love playing around with polymer clay, I have a crapload of that stuff here in my apartment but I never get to using them anymore (used to make strawberry shaped earrings :D)

OMG... parang i want to buy one from you! haha. this is amazing... pero parang bet ko pag 5 times bigger? haha. bigat ba yan? ^^

Toxic- So far, I don't sell my necklaces kasi I don't think I'm good enough yet! Hahaha, pang-giveaway lang sa blog minsan. :D

It's a bit heavy, pero super tibay kasi ng polymer clay. I think it's manageable naman, since I have big metal pendants that weigh more and I don't even notice weight anymore, lol. If you want something 5x bigger, I think it's better to go with a lightweight clay like Makin's air dry clay instead of Sculpey na kelangan pa i-bake. :D

this is really pretty! my mom also makes jewelry and sells them on her multiply page: liz57.multiply.com. she also holds seminars to teach other people to make chains and locks, etc...but her jewelry is conventional and it caters to people her age as well as kids.

this one you made is something celebs and yuppies would like to wear! maybe you could consider ur artistry another source of income! :D
