Who Watches the Watchmen? Not Alan Moore!

Practically everyone and their mother has seen Watchmen by now, and though this paltry review of mine may seem irrelevant compared to the virtual sea of reviews out there, I still felt the need to throw in my 2 cents.

First of all, it must be stated that I absolutely loved the Watchmen movie. I couldn't have hoped for a more faithful adaptation. It left out some bits, sure, but the parts that were sacrificed made the movie better, sleeker, and the resulting movie was extremely respectful of the source material. Zack Snyder is quite good at using comics as his storyboard material, (though what happened to 300 and those crazy monster things, I'll never know), and with Watchmen he was clearly on top of his game.

There were some scenes that were shot panel-by-panel, religiously (almost ridiculously, at times), faithful to the comic. There were also easter eggs galore, very similar to the actual comic book that had them in spades. I think that the film requires maybe 3 or 4 viewings to fully absorb everything, again not unlike the comic (which Moore has stated time and again should be read several times).

Alan Moore has been pretty adamant in interviews that he is 100% against this adaptation, and I think that that's a pity because this is the one director who actually got it right. "Watchmen" was very, very well done, and if Moore would just get off his high horse long enough to actually go and see it, I think even he'd admit that it kept to the spirit of his work.

Still, artist Gibbons has been extremely supportive of the movie from beginning to end, and Director Zack Snyder has at least his approval to console him. After all, Gibbons fantastic lines and storytelling are as much to blame for Watchmen's success as Moore's writing, and I highly doubt that it would've been anywhere near as good if someone else had been behind the art.

All in all, I highly recommend checking "Watchmen" out. Whether comic/superhero movie fan or not, it's a fantastic bit of thought-provoking cinema that deserves to be watched. ;)

Given the track record, we can't blame him to hate DC's guts. But this is the first Moore adaptation that respected the comic book. Swamp thing plz?

Moore WILL watch this someday. I'm sure someone will break into his house, win against him in a duel of magic and force him to watch the film.

I know nothing about comics, but this Alan Moore dude sounds like an ass.

RJ - I guess so, but I just can't abide by someone who forms opinions about things without even seeing it for himself.

JC - Haha, yeah. He's arguably the best in the business, but like quite a lot of the other stars in the industry, his personality leaves a lot to be desired.
